A teacher-authored overview of the reformed paper confirms the structure—Section A tests short-answer recall, Section B requires applying evidence to scenario-based prompts tied to a required Context, and Section C demands extended essays that combine a Core Concept with a Context under higher-order command terms such as discuss, evaluate, or to what extent.
What that same overview also makes clear is that approach content—studies, theories, and methods—can travel across different Contexts without being reinvented from scratch. That’s not a loophole; it’s the logic of the assessment design. One well-understood study can earn marks in Section A, anchor a Section B application, and drive a Section C essay, all from a single investment in depth.
When studies are carefully chosen and genuinely mastered, a compact bank tends to outperform a longer list you only half-know. The condition matters: flexible command over a study—adjusting how you deploy its aims, findings, and evaluation to match a Context or command term—requires a depth that surface familiarity simply can’t supply.
Multi-Dimensional Familiarity with a Study
Recognition isn’t the same as command. Most students know their studies well enough to pick them out of a lineup; Paper 1 rewards those who can actually work with them—applying findings to unfamiliar scenarios, linking them to specific Core Concepts, and calibrating depth and balance to command terms like describe, explain, discuss, or evaluate, all under time pressure.
Multi-dimensional familiarity means something specific: you can state the aim, procedure, and key findings; connect the study to at least one Core Concept; discuss methodological strengths and limitations in substantive terms; situate it in its cultural and ethical context; and compare or contrast it with other evidence—at a level of detail that matches what the question actually demands.
A fast way to diagnose where you stand: run a 60–90 second no-notes self-test on each study. If you can’t name one Core Concept it supports, one credible limitation or counterclaim, and a different Context or scenario you could address with the same findings, you’re still at recognition level, not exam-ready. A set of learning experiments on retrieval and transfer found that practicing recall with varied examples improves later transfer, so rotate your prompt each time—sometimes as application, sometimes as evaluation.

Evaluating and Selecting High-Leverage Studies
Not all studies are worth equal revision time, and treating them as if they are is one of the more expensive mistakes a Paper 1 candidate can make. Earlier cognitive-psychology research that modeled study behavior under time constraints found that when learners can anticipate which material will be tested, investing more deeply in a smaller subset can outperform shallow coverage of many items. - Score each study 0–2 on every criterion (max 8): 0 = weak/rarely usable, 1 = sometimes usable, 2 = reliably usable.
- Use totals: 7–8 keep and deepen; 5–6 keep only if it fills a clear Context/Core Concept gap, otherwise park; 0–4 drop or park with no new revision time.
- Keep a one-line log: study name, usable Contexts, best strength, best criticism, total score, last review date.
- Every two weeks, re-score only the five highest- and five lowest-rated studies for quick comparisons.
- Don’t add a new study until you’ve raised the score of at least three existing ones by adding a Core Concept link, counterclaim, or method/ethics point.
These scores and thresholds are revision heuristics, not official IB rules. But they provide a guardrail that matters: they prevent random accumulation without leaving obvious gaps in Context or Core Concept coverage—which is precisely where a compact bank can quietly stop being compact and start being a gamble.
Deploying One Study Across Exam Scenarios
A single study, well chosen and well understood, doesn’t have one use—it has several. The same experiment can anchor a Section A short-answer, support a Section C essay combining a Context with a Core Concept, inform thinking about methodological design in other tasks, and feed an evaluative argument about behavioral claims. The question type changes; the study doesn’t have to.
In a Section A short-answer, precision is the job. State the aim and key finding, then show how the result explains the behavior in the vignette. Evaluation stays minimal unless the command term demands it—the marks are for accurate fit, not for demonstrating everything you know.
When the same study supports a Section C essay, the frame widens. Link it to the named Core Concept and Context, explain how the method and findings address the essay question, and develop balanced evaluation—commentary on generalizability, cultural or ethical considerations, and a contrasting piece of evidence. The study is the same; what changes is how far you push each dimension.
In other class tasks, a study’s design choices—sampling decisions, controls, procedural details—can serve as reference points for thinking through design problems. In evaluative questions about behavior, its methodological strengths and limitations become reasons to support, qualify, or challenge a position. One study, redeployed across several contexts and registers.
Auditing and Refining Your Study Bank
Run every study in your current revision set through the scoring framework and sort the results into three working groups: keep and deepen, conditional, and parked. A study only earns a conditional rating if you can name the specific Context or Core Concept it uniquely covers; without that, it belongs in the parked pile.
Apply the Section 2 self-test to anything you scored in the low or middle range. If you can produce the aim and result on demand but can’t retrieve a Core Concept link, a limitation you could argue through, or a way to redirect the same findings into a different Context, that study is still definition-level. Unless you can add one missing dimension quickly and concretely, park it rather than carrying it as exam-ready.
Then redirect effort toward the middle band—studies hovering at scores that could reach the top range with one or two focused sessions. Those are your highest-leverage targets, because each one you move up extends the flexibility of your entire bank. The stop rule from the framework applies directly here: improve existing studies before adding new ones, or you’ll end up back with an unwieldy list that dilutes your focus.
Reinforcing the Compact Study Bank Strategy
