Platforms that aggregate offshore development teams present a standardized picture — profiles, ratings, hourly rates, skill tags. That picture is useful for narrowing the field. It’s not useful for predicting how a team will actually perform on your specific project.
The variables that determine offshore development success aren’t well-captured by marketplace profiles.
What Profiles Don’t Show You
A five-star rating from previous clients tells you the team delivered what those clients needed. It doesn’t tell you whether what those clients needed is similar to what you need. A team that’s excellent at building e-commerce storefronts on a specific platform may be average at custom application development — same stars, very different relevance to your project.
The Due Diligence That Actually Matters
The best sites to hire offshore developers are the ones that make real due diligence possible — reference access, portfolio transparency, and trial engagement options. Platforms that make it difficult to talk to references or review actual code samples before committing are structurally favoring the sellers over the buyers.
GitHub profiles, public repositories, and technical interviews that include real coding assessments are better signals than marketplace ratings. Stack Overflow’s developer survey provides useful benchmark data on offshore developer skill distributions by region if you’re trying to calibrate expectations.
Contract and IP Considerations
Work-for-hire arrangements and IP assignment clauses are standard in domestic development contracts and often missing or ambiguous in offshore ones. Before any development work starts, have a lawyer review the contract and confirm that your IP is clearly protected under the applicable jurisdiction’s law. This is not optional.
Managing the Engagement Once It Starts
The companies that get the best results from offshore development are typically the ones that invest significantly in project management on their side — clear specifications, structured check-ins, defined acceptance criteria, and a dedicated point of contact who can provide timely feedback. Offshore development is not a low-management option.
